Caring for Aged Parents
While attending to an elderly mom and / or dad is a noble caregiver option, caring for aged parents can be both rewarding and overwhelming. Sometimes it can seem like the only and all solution to helping our loved one maintain a quality of life. However, shifting from the role of daughter or son to caregiver oftentimes puts a strain on relationships. It’s a wonderful opportunity to spend time together, but it doesn’t allow for those special moments brought on by an impromptu visit. Shifting from a parent child to child parent connection is complex because the family dynamics are simply not the same. It’s a transition that is difficult, if not impossible, to adjust to.
Aging is not for the faint hearted. Let’s face it, none of us want to lose our independence. The elderly struggle with a multitude of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual infirmities. Your adult children caring for you can sometimes add to the contention. What is the best “care” for our loved one often runs contrary to a lifetime of a self-governing lifestyle. (As traditions have it) old habits die hard, and tensions arise. We can do what is right by our loved one and put up with resistance. Or, in an attempt to “keep the peace” and “get along,” we can compromise on the most basic and beneficial care plan practices. There is another option.
Caring for aged parents via reliable third party assisted living allows the freedom to maintain a relational bond in peace. The golden years can be celebrated with ease of mind as we enjoy the company of our loved one without the stresses of life. Spontaneous activities will be rewarding and memorable and will add to the quality of life of your parent and you.
